  • (1888PressRelease) September 16, 2023 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a SafeGuardS looking at Japan’s designation of three substances as Class I Specified Chemical Substances.

The Manufacturing Industries Bureau of the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has designated three persistent organic pollutants (POP) as Class I Specified Chemical Substances under the nation’s ‘Act on the Evaluation of Chemical Substances and Regulation of their Manufacture, etc.’ This act is also known as the Chemical Substances Control Law (CSCL).

    The three substances are:
    • Methoxychlor – a pesticide
    • Dechlorane plus – a flame retardant
    • UV-328 – a UV-absorber

METI’s announcement in August 2023 follows a decision at the Eleventh Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention, where these substances were listed for elimination under Annex A to the Convention.

SGS has published SafeGuardS 111.23 to help stakeholders understand the new restrictions. It includes details of several important dates contained within the announcement, including the date of applicability.

Stakeholders are advised to review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 111.23 for more information.
