  • (1888PressRelease) November 11, 2023 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 141.23 to keep stakeholders up to date with Australian proposals to restrict short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCP).

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) announced the proposal in October 2023. If accepted, SCCP will be included in Schedule 7 of the Industrial Chemicals Environmental Management Standard (IChEMS) register, which prohibits its import, manufacture, use and export.

    Limited derogations include:
    • Unintentional trace contamination (UTC)
    • Disposal
    • Articles (products) in use prior to the effective date of the decision

SGS publishes SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that may affect their business. In recent months, this has included moves in Australia to restriction/prohibit several persistent organic pollutants (POP) that are listed under the Stockholm Convention (SafeGuardS 121.23 and 131.23).

SafeGuardS 141.23 contains details of the current proposal for SCCP, including a table detailing the requirements for UTC presence and the proposed effective date of July 1, 2024.

Stakeholders are advised to review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 141.23 for more details.
