  • (1888PressRelease) April 29, 2023 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a SafeGuardS looking at a recent amendment to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard ISO 8124-3:2020/Amd.1:2023 for toy safety.

ISO 8124-3:2020/Amd.1:2023 determines the migration of certain elements from toy materials and parts. These are:
    • Antimony (Sb)
    • Arsenic (As)
    • Barium (Ba)
    • Cadmium (Cd)
    • Chromium (Cr)
    • Lead (Pb)
    • Mercury (Hg)
    • Selenium (Se)
    • Boron (B)

Among the changes brought in by the amended standard are a new definition for slime, an expansion in the number of toy categories and a new set of analytical corrections that includes boron.

SGS has issued SafeGuardS 046.23 to help stakeholders gain a better overview of the changes. It includes one table detailing the major changes and a second with the maximum acceptable migration limits for each element divided by toy category.

To learn more, Stakeholders are advised to review original SafeGuardS 046.23.

ISO 8124-3:2020/Amd.1:2023 ‘Safety of Toys – Part 3: Migration of certain elements – Amendment 1: Limits for boron and other elements in slime, and barium in modeling clay’ was issued in March 2023 and should be considered as effective immediately.
