  • (1888PressRelease) April 29, 2022 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published an overview of new recycling sorting symbols for clothing, household linens and footwear to help stakeholders operating in France.

On February 1, 2022, Re_fashion published new recycling symbols approved by the French Ministry for Ecological Transition. These relate to a requirement in Article 17 of France’s Anti-waste Law for a Circular Economy (AGEC Law) and Decree n° 2021-835 of June 29, 2021, making it mandatory for consumer products to have standardized information to support more efficient recycling.

Re_fashion is financed to handle textile recycling actions, including the development and submission of signage in compliance with these rules.

Companies operating in France now have until February 1, 2023, to ensure new products have the required signage. Pre-existing stocks – defined as products manufactured or imported prior to February 1, 2023 – must comply by August 1, 2023.

SGS’s original SafeGuardS 050/22 provides a helpful overview of the new symbols, including examples.

Stakeholders should also be aware that consumer product packaging now has a set of symbols for recycling, which were published in November 2021. Therefore, consumer products should have two sets of signage – one for the product (textile, clothing, footwear) and one for the packaging.
