  • (1888PressRelease) February 11, 2023 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a SafeGuardS looking at France’s recent order that challenges clothing, linen and footwear (TLC) brands to use sustainable processes, integrate recycled materials into products and display environmental labels. To promote these improvements, bonuses are being offered.

Order of November 23, 2022, places new rules and expectations on eco-organizations with extended producer responsibility (EPR) in the TLC sector. EPR are designed to help France combat an increasing amount of consumer waste.

Under the scheme, producers, distributors and importers involved in the TLC sector are now required to responsibly manage a product’s end-of-life, if marketed in France. They can achieve this by either:
    • Creating an approved recycling program
    • Financially contributing to an accredited producer responsibility organization (PRO)

Currently, Refashion is the sole eco-organization accredited by French authorities to cover the textile industry’s legal obligations under the EPR scheme. They are proposing a bonus system relating to the display of environmental labels, but a decree is not expected before mid-2023.

Other bonus schemes relating to Order of November 23, 2022, relate to:
    • Product durability
    • Environmental labeling certification
    • Recycled material incorporation

SGS has published SafeGuardS 010.23 to give stakeholders an overview of the updated requirements and Refashion’s new objectives as specified in the decree. This is part of a push by SGS designed to help manufacturers and suppliers of textile products understand the latest French requirements.
