  • (1888PressRelease) September 28, 2023 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a SafeGuardS to help stakeholders understand the recent vote by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to mandate ANSI/UL 4200A-2023 as the safety standard for products containing button cells or coin batteries.

Voluntary standard ANSI/UL 4200A-2023 (Standard for Safety for Products Incorporating Button Batteries or Coin Cell Batteries) was adopted by the CPSC following a vote on September 11, 2023. It is codified as 16 CFR 1263.

The CPSC has determined that the recent update to ANSI/UL 4200A, published on August 30, 2023, does meet the performance and labelling requirements in section 2(a) of Reese’s Law. This law mandates the CPSC to promulgate a consumer product safety standard that helps eliminate or significantly reduce the risk of injury to children aged six years or under during reasonably foreseeable use or misuse conditions.

SGS has published SafeGuardS 118.23 to help stakeholders gain an overview of the new mandatory standard. In addition to details of the provisions covered in the standard, it also contains details of the enforcement discretion and the separate final rule that will be issued in relation to packaging and labeling.

Stakeholders should review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 118.23 for more information.
