  • (1888PressRelease) July 07, 2023 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a SafeGuardS to help stakeholders understand a recent update to the state of Utah’s rule for bedding, upholstered furniture and quilted clothing.

R70-101 applies to businesses involved in the manufacturing, retail (including e-commerce), wholesaling, processing, repairing, sterilizing or selling of:
    • Bedding
    • Upholstered furniture
    • Quilted clothing
    • Filling materials

It sets out the guidelines, protocols and processes for governing the production, repair, sale and distribution of these items.

Under the rule, all products offered for retail in the state must have an easily accessible law label that can be examined prior to purchase. In the case of online retailers, this can be available as a digital version – either image or link.

R70-101-10 introduces specific requirements for use of the term ‘recycled’ in relation to filling materials. Manufacturers must obtain certification from the Global Recycling Standard (GRS) for each lot or batch of recycled materials they use. If the requirements in R70-101-10 are not met, the term ‘recycled’ cannot be used.

SGS has published SafeGuardS 071.23 to help stakeholders gain a better understanding of the impact of R70-101 on businesses operating in the state of Utah. It includes more details of the requirements relating to recycled materials.

Stakeholders are advised to review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 071.23 to learn more.
