SGS Informs Stakeholders About Changes to Rhode Island’s Ban on PFAS in Food Packaging

(1888PressRelease) August 05, 2023 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders up to date with the latest changes affecting food packaging rules in Rhode Island, USA.

In June 2023, the state governor signed S 0724 Substitute A as amended (Chapter 258, 2023)/H 5861 Substitute A as amended (Chapter 257, 2023). This delays an amendment to the state’s Toxic Packaging Reduction Act that will prohibit the intentional adding of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to food packaging, which was originally approved in June 2022.

The provision was originally to come into effect on January 1, 2024. Following the recent update, the provision will now come into effect on July 31, 2024.
