  • (1888PressRelease) June 06, 2017 - On April 12, SGS India hosted its first furniture seminar since opening in December 2016 to promote new furniture capabilities. Attracting delegates from Moradabad, a five-hour car journey from Gurgaon, the event principally focused on the main regulations and standards affecting furniture exports to the US and EU.

During the seminar, delegates were given an in-depth understand of the standards their products must comply with, along with a look at statistical data for both US and European market recalls. The presentation also explained to attendees how the European Standardization Committee (CEN) works, and gave them some understanding of how standards are written. In addition, delegates were also given an overview of recent changes to the BIFMA x5.1:2017 standard for the US.

Currently 47% of India's furniture exports are bound for UK and US markets and so it is vital for manufacturers to fully understand the complexities of these standards in order to be assured they are supplying compliant products to their target markets.

Opened on December 15, 2016, SGS's new laboratory in Manesar provides testing services against several US and EU standards, including:
    • Mechanical and physical requirements:
    - ANSI BIFMA X5.1, X5.4, X5.5, X5.9, ASTM F2057, etc. for the US market
    - EN 12520, EN 581, EN 14749, etc. for the EU market

    • Flammability (upholstery furniture and textile parts):
    - CTB 117:2013 for the US market
    - EN 1021, ISO 8191, BS 5852 for the EU market

    • Chemicals:
    - Formaldehyde (wood), PCP, cadmium (plastics), azo dyes (textile) for the EU market
