"This awareness month is a public education initiative linking researchers, doctors, patients and common public around the country. It provides a platform to appreciate the scientific and clinical developments on stem cells, unfolding the speculation and myths around the concept and therefore encourage more people to store cord blood stem cells," said by Dr. Venkatesh President, Bangalore Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

    What is Cord Blood?
Every infant connected to mother via umbilical cord before birth i.e., in medical terms - it is the connecting cord from the developing embryo or fetus to the placenta. So when a baby is born doctor use to cut the umbilical cord and the blood inside it is called Cord Blood. And in medical terms: "Umbilical cord blood is blood that remains in the placenta and in the attached umbilical cord after childbirth". So the whole process of cord blood collection takes place in 5 minutes immediately after birth.

Cord blood has been used to treat nearly 80 serious diseases, including leukemia, other cancers, and blood disorders. "It is not just for cancer, cord blood stem cells stored from the umbilical cord in a stem cell bank have been useful in curing several other illness like leukaemia, thallesemia and other neurological problems. Apparently, lack of awareness, myths and the cost involved has been a major drawback for the system [of preserving cord blood] to pick up in our country," said by Dr Ganesh, HoD of Cancer Centre, Vydehi Cancer Hospital(http://www.vims.ac.in/healthcare/oncology-specialist.html), at a press meet here on Tuesday.
