Save Our Cemeteries To Participate In Katrina 10 Citywide Day Of Service

  • New Orleans, LA (1888PressRelease) August 13, 2015 - Save Our Cemeteries announced today that it be participating in the Office of Mayor Mitch Landrieu's K10 Citywide Day of Service on Saturday, August 29, commemorating the 10 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina that devastated the city of New Orleans and the gulf coast. Save Our Cemeteries' contribution to the event will be to conduct a clean-up of Lafayette Cemetery No. 2, from 8:30 am - 12:30 pm. SOC is seeking volunteers to help remove vegetation from in and around tombs and perform general clean-up operations.

    "We are honoured to be able to participate in Mayor Mitch Landrieu's and the city of New Orleans' K10 Citywide Day of service," states Amanda Walker, Executive Director at Save Our Cemeteries. "This day of service fits perfectly with our organization's efforts to help preserve and protect our city's historic cemeteries."     The Citywide Day of Service will engage thousands of volunteers and focus service on seven specific regions of the City. Volunteers will support over 100 individual projects. The event is open to volunteers of all ages, backgrounds and levels of experience.

    Historic Lafayette Cemetery No. 2, owned by the city of New Orleans, was founded in 1850. The cemetery is home to many diverse benevolent society tombs dating back to the 19th century, and is located in Central City at 2801 S. Saratoga Street, New Orleans.
