  • (1888PressRelease) June 22, 2018 - On February 28, 2018, the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) introduced its new Saudi Energy Efficiency Program and signaled its intention to include specific performance and energy labeling requirements for water heaters.

The proposal was originally circulated by the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in June 2016, with SASO publishing the new Saudi Standard No. 2884:2017 Water Heaters Energy Performance Requirements and Labeling in the Official Gazette, on January 5, 2018.

Under the proposal, water heaters will be required to carry a valid energy efficiency label pertaining to notice number G/TBT/N/SAU/989.

    The regulation will cover:
    • Electric storage type water heaters up to 2,000 liters
    • Electric instantaneous type water heaters up to 2,000 liters
    • Storage tanks up to 2,000 liters
    • Electric heat pump and solar water heaters up to 2,000 liters
    • Gas-type water heaters up to 300 liters

According to articles 3, 4 and 9 of SASO's regulation, issued by Royal Decree No. 216, these proposals are intended to optimize electrical energy consumption, to preserve the national economy and its earnings, and reduce average consumption by consumers.

The new standard for water heaters comes into effect on July 5, 2018.
