    Hosted by the San Diego Law Library Foundation, the annual Bernard E. Witkin, Esq. Awards Ceremony is held to honor members of the San Diego legal community for civic leadership and excellence in the practice of the law, adjudication of the law, legal education, and the advancement of access to justice. The monies raised by the event further the library’s efforts to be the premier community center for legal information.

    This year's awards were presented Thursday, October 4, at Tom Ham’s Lighthouse. Additional Witkin Awards categories and recipients for 2018 include:

    • The Adjudication of the Law: Hon. Desirée A. Bruce-Lyle
    • Legal Education: Margaret A. Dalton, Esq.
    • The Advancement of Access to Justice: The Human Trafficking Collaborative of the Lawyers Club of San Diego

    With a career spanning more than 40 years, Casey, Jr.’s legal skills and landmark cases have impacted both consumers and the legal community. This year, he was named one of California’s Top 100 Attorneys and Top Plaintiff’s Attorneys by The Los Angeles/San Francisco Daily Journal and was honored with a CLAY (California Lawyer of the Year) award for his work on the national VW Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee (PSC) overseeing litigation targeting Volkswagen over its diesel emissions scandal. In 2017, he was appointed as liaison counsel for the Wells Fargo Multi-District Litigation (MDL) – national class action lawsuits consolidated following reports the banking giant forced its car loan customers to buy unnecessary auto policies. He serves on the national PSC overseeing the Eco Diesel Litigation against Fiat Chrysler and on the PSC overseeing NFL head injury litigation. Additionally, he has helped raise awareness about concussion safety and the growing controversy related to head injuries and potential brain damage in his representation of the family of deceased NFL player Junior Seau.

    A third-generation attorney, Casey, Jr. is past president of the American Association of Trial Lawyers (now known as the American Association for Justice) and has been lauded with numerous professional accolades throughout his career, including a perpetual award in his honor, the "David S. Casey, Jr. Consumer Advocate Award" from the Consumer Attorneys of San Diego. A fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, he is the recipient of more than 80 awards and was inducted into the Consumer Attorneys of San Diego’s "Trial Lawyer Hall of Fame."

    He received his bachelor’s degree from Trinity College and a law degree from the University of San Diego School of Law.
