  • Salinas, CA (1888PressRelease) July 20, 2011 - Monterey County musicians will rally to show their appreciation for the Salinas Police Officers Association with a benefit concert for the "Police Unity Tour" on Saturday, July 30, 2011. Red Beans & Rice, Cali Nation and the Orlando Castro Trio will perform live in concert at the Steinbeck Center in Salinas. Tickets are $25. Music starts at 7 PM and continues until 11 PM.

    The primary purpose of the Police Unity Tour is to raise awareness of Law Enforcement Officers who have died in the line of duty. The secondary purpose is to raise funds for the National Enforcement Officer's Memorial and Museum.www.policeunitytour.com

    Formed in 1993, Red Beans & Rice has become a household name on the Central California Coast. Founding member Gil Rubio's original compositions and his arrangements of a carefully selected blend of Chicago, Texas swing, Louisiana, and contemporary music has earned the praise of fans and critics across the United States. The band has released 5 CDs that have all received regular airplay throughout the world on radio stations and Internet sites.     Red Beans & Rice also features the talents of vocalist Jon Gorman, keyboardist John Tindel, bassist Brian Shaw, drummer Karl Stearns and Tamas Marius on saxes.

    The album, featuring 4 new original songs by guitarist Gil Rubio, was produced, engineered and mixed by Rubio at his Wolf Tracks Studio in Seaside, California. Rubio, the founder of Red Beans & Rice and the group's principal songwriter digs deep into his emotional well with the inspiring compositions "We Need to Help Each Other" and "Choose A Side".
    Although often billed as a blues band, Monterey, California based Red Beans & Rice consistently blends original compositions and lesser-known classics into an up tempo danceable gumbo of New Orleans-influenced, blues-inspired party music suitable for dancing or just listening.

    Orlando Castro was born and developed his artistic talents in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico. He has been performing professionally since he was 17 years old. Orlando is a successful singer, songwriter, guitarist, and harmonica player and performs Afro-Cuban Percussion as well. Orlando performs with Mambo Tropical, Broken English and Orlando Y Sus Jugosos and has had many performances in Mexico and Latin America. Orlando shares his time and talent teaching the youth of Salinas, California where he is the Executive Director of the Alisal Fine Arts Center and the Director of Rondalla Alisal.

    Orlando Castro is also an accomplished songwriter. Orlando penned two songs for Luis Miguel's breakthrough album, "Aries" (WEA 1993), which won the 1994 Grammy Award for best "Latin Pop Album." Additionally, Tower of Power played on "Que Nivel De Mujer", yet another one of Orlando's songs on the "Aries" album. That same year, Orlando once again struck gold when he won the coveted BMI's 1994 Song Of The Year award for the song, "Suave", sung by Luis Miguel.

    Moreover, Orlando's hit song, "Suave", shot to the top nine (9) Billboard Hot Latin Tracks for all of 1994. In 1997, Orlando's song, "Si Te Vas", was included in "Billboard Hot Latin Tracks: Best of Pop 1997: Various Artists". Currently, both of Orlando's songs, "Suave" and "Si Te Vas", have re-emerged in Luis Miguel's remix album "No Culpes a La Noche - The Club Remixes" (Warner Music 2009) and have recently climbed to #4 on the Mexican and USA Latin charts. In Argentina during the same
    interval, the album peaked at #1.

    Cali Nation is the popular danceable dub reggae; rock 'n' roll creation of bassist and singer/songwriter Andrew Nack.
