  • (1888PressRelease) August 21, 2010 - Washington, D.C. - Annapolis boaters can learn the basics of sailboat rigging from veteran local instructors, including inspection, maintenance and tuning-even a demonstration of the new synthetic rigs and how they work-at a new class held during the United States Sailboat Show in October.

DIY Boat Owner magazine will sponsor the class Friday, Oct. 8 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Annapolis Marriott, adjacent to the boat show. Tickets are available now at www.DIY-Boat.com/rigging.

Attendees will receive three hours of hands-on instruction from experts with decades of experience, as well as the chance to talk one-on-one with these experts and ask questions about their boat and their projects.

Participants will learn how to inspect rigging for weak or distressed equipment; which maintenance projects they can undertake themselves and which require professional attention; and how to tune their standing rigging to improve performance.
In addition, the class will include a primer on the new synthetic rigging, which replaces steel cable with ultra-strong synthetic rope, and a lecture by a boater who installed a synthetic rig himself. Participants will be able to see his boat on the docks at the show.

Instructors for the class are Mike Meer, owner of Southbound Cruising Services in Annapolis; Andy Schell, a licensed captain and rigger based in Annapolis; and John Franta, owner of Colligo Marine in Arizona.

The class features catered snacks and drinks, and all participants will receive a gear bag with a stainless steel "deck key" (a tool that opens fuel and water tanks) and other products, samples and discounts worth more than $100. A raffle will give away an Autotether Wireless Safety Lanyard, a GRP Moisture Meter and a dozen other prizes.

The class costs $45 for individuals and $75 for couples, and boaters are not required to attend the show in order to attend the class. Participants who sign up online at www.DIY-Boat.com/rigging will receive DIY's Sailboat Rigging CD, which sells for $20, for FREE at the class.

The event is DIY Boat Owner's latest Skills Class, hands-on instructional lectures held nationwide. Unlike traditional boating classes, which can take days and cost hundreds of dollars, Skills Classes are designed to take just a few hours-at a price that won't sink the average boater.
