  • (1888PressRelease) May 13, 2011 - The first themes envisaged for such collaborative research include biomass, energy and CO2 utilisation chains as well as methods of enhancing energy efficiency. “We are pleased to have secured such a competent collaborative partner in RWE with its wealth of European experience in developing renewables and energy efficiency solutions”, explained Deputy Director of the Kurchatov Institute, Prof. Jaroslav Strombach.

Agreement signed with renowned Kurchatov Institute and Skolkovo Foundation
Focus on renewables and energy efficiency

The aim of this collaborative work is to foster the German-Russian modernisation partnership. Agreement was originally reached on this at the highest political level in October 2008 during the Petersburg Dialogue. The key areas of common interest are healthcare, further development of user-friendly regulatory mechanisms, the efficiency of raw material extraction and utilisation, and logistics.

“Energy efficiency has enormous potential to save power and reduce CO2 emissions. This will be one of the pre-eminent tasks of the next few decades”, said Dr. Frank-Detlef Drake, head of Research and Development at RWE AG.

The intention is for collaboration to take a variety of forms, potentially ranging from the establishment of ongoing expert dialogue, staging of workshops and joint projects, through to the development of a joint research and development centre. The planned Skolkovo Innovation Centre near Moscow could prove to be the ideal base for some of these activities. “This collaboration with RWE is an excellent complement to the partnerships we have already formed with other international technology companies” said Stanislav Naumov, Vice-president of the Skolkovo Foundation.
