    Ropers Majeski Kohn & Bentley (RMKB) has strengthened the caliber of its growing Intellectual Property practice with the addition of renowned litigator Neil Smith. Previously with Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton and Limbach & Limbach, respectively, Smith joins as a partner in RMKB's San Francisco and Silicon Valley offices. With more than 35 years of experience, Smith has counseled a wide range of commercial clients in high-profile, high-stakes intellectual property disputes. His arrival will help expand RMKB's IP capabilities firmwide.

    Smith focuses his practice on trademark, copyright and patent infringement litigation, as well as intellectual property strategy and counseling, including Internet law, licensing, anti-counterfeiting, gray market and extraterritorial application of the law. He has represented some of the best known names in the high-technology, corporate and software industries, among them Levi Strauss, Adidas, Memorex, Sega and Gucci, as well as media, recording and video game companies.

    Smith regularly lectures at law schools, bar associations and industry trade groups. He has authored numerous articles on Internet and intellectual property subjects and is a columnist for New Matter, the official publication of the Intellectual Property Law Section of the State Bar of California. Named to Best Lawyers in America for more than ten years, some of Smith's accolades include being named Managing Intellectual Property's "Litigator of the Year" and receiving the Patent & Trademark Office Society's first-ever Joseph Rossman Award, given annually to the author of the article in the Journal that makes the greatest contribution to the field of patents, trademarks or copyrights. He has held numerous leadership positions among legal and IP organizations, including serving as president of the San Francisco Patent & Trademark Law Association and serving on the International Trademark Association's Panel of Neutrals.

    Smith served as a law clerk to Judge Giles S. Rich on the Court of Customs and Patent Appeals, predecessor to the U.S. Federal Circuit Court. He has successfully argued cases in the Federal Circuit and Ninth Circuit, and has filed briefs on IP subjects in the U.S. Supreme Court.

    Smith earned a Masters in Law in patent and trade regulation law from George Washington Law School and a J.D. from Columbia Law School. He holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Columbia University and a B.A. in physical sciences from Columbia College.
