Robert R. McMillan '57 to Speak on "Healthcare: Today and Tomorrow"

McMillan '57 will deliver a lecture on "Healthcare: Today and Tomorrow," as part of the Adelphi University President's Series on Critical Issues on Friday, December 9, 2011, at 8:30 a.m., in Alumni House, 154 Cambridge Avenue, Garden City, NY. A light breakfast will be served. The lecture is free and open to the public. Seating is limited and reservations are required by December 2.

    McMillan will share insights about our nation's largest industry and the current healthcare issues impacting the health of Americans, with a focus on the uninsured and the growing shortage of nurses, doctors, and the challenges we face in trying to fix the system. The grim statistics are that more than 30 million in the United States are without healthcare coverage. He will dissect the possible solutions such as universal healthcare or emulating England and Canada's single-payer system. The presentation will also cover the problem of rising healthcare spending and what can be expected in the future.

    McMillan was the first non-physician to serve on the Board of Trustees of the American Medical Association. He also served on the Board of Directors of WellChoice, Inc. McMillan is the founder of the Long Island Housing Partnership, an organization dedicated to the construction of affordable housing for families. Also an author, McMillan has published two books: Global Passage-Transformation of Panama and the Panama Canal and Columns: Marilyn Monroe to Vietnam and Iraq. Currently, he writes a weekly column for the Anton Community Newspapers. Often interviewed by the media, he has provided political commentary for CNN, MSNBC, and Fox. For 14 years, he co-hosted the PBS television show Face-Off.

    Mr. McMillan is an alumnus of Adelphi and earned his juris doctor degree from Brooklyn Law School. He is a former member of Adelphi's Board of Trustees. Additionally, in 2004, he received the Ruth S. Harley Distinguished Alumni Award.

    Dr. Robert A. Scott launched Adelphi's President's Series on Critical Issues in 2001 to provide students, scholars, and distinguished guests with an intimate forum in which to explore critical local, regional, national, and global topics.
