    Not only has his singular approach to photography made him a favorite among hip-hop notables but also has established him as a renowned artist with dozens of solo exhibits all over the world from The Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture to the Maison Folie of Wazemmes in France. He is the author of five monographs and has contributed to over twenty photography books along with being an educator and lecturer. On May 22, 2018, Jamel Shabazz will be honored by The Gordon Parks Foundation among the likes of Ava DuVernay and Ta-Nehisi Coates, just to name a few.

    About Jamel Shabazz
    Jamel Shabazz was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of 15, he picked up his first camera and started to document his peers.

    Inspired by photographers Leonard Freed, James Van Der Zee, and Gordon Parks, he was marveled with their documentation of the African American community. In 1980 as a concerned photographer with a clear vision, he embarked on a mission to extensively document various aspects of life, from youth culture to a wide range of social subjects.

    Shabazz says his goal is to contribute to the preservation of world history and culture.
