  • Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, NC (1888PressRelease) July 29, 2010 - Theresa Clark, president of the Raleigh Regional Association of REALTORS® (RRAR) (www.rrar.com), has announced that five scholarships were awarded to high school graduates Nicholas Savage, Dana Andersen, Sarah Kline, Ashley Stacy and Kathryn Hornaday to recognize their outstanding community service and academic excellence.

    Nicholas Savage, a graduate of Wake Forest-Rolesville, was awarded a $2,000 scholarship for founding and donating more than 800 hours to a baseball league for special needs children in Wake Forest. He plans to attend N.C. State University in the fall and major in engineering.

    Dana Andersen, a graduate of Apex, volunteered more than 500 hours during her high school career and was awarded a $1,000 scholarship. She will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and double major in clinical psychology and business.

    Sarah Kline, a graduate of Cary Christian, has been a member of Girl Scouts of America for 10 years and has volunteered more than 4,000 hours to the organization. She was awarded a $1,000 scholarship and plans to attend Duke University in the fall.

    Ashley Stacy, a graduate of East Wake High School of Arts, Education and Global Studies, was awarded a scholarship for $1,000 after volunteering for more than 16 nonprofit organizations. She plans to attend East Carolina University and pursue a career in medicine.

    Kathryn Hornaday, a graduate of Green Hope, was awarded $1,000 for donating more than 500 hours to local organizations. She seeks a major in biology and ultimately hopes to attend medical school and become a neonatal surgeon.

    DETAILS:
    - The Community Service Committee offers opportunities for RRAR members to engage in various projects that are designed to serve the local community. Throughout the year, the CSC sponsors and offers programs for members to get involved. In the past, the Community Service has supported many local nonprofit organizations, including Project Angel Tree, Miracle League, The Shepherd's Table Soup Kitchen, Building Together Ministries, InterFaith Food Shuttle and Resources for Seniors.

    - The committee's goal in granting these annual scholarships is to recognize talented and hard-working students for selflessly dedicating their time to the community.

    - The Scholarship Review Committee considered the following criteria: Financial need of the applicant, Grade Point Average (GPA) and scholastic performance, work experience while in high school, response to essay question, involvement in extracurricular activities and leadership roles, and involvement in community service.
