  • (1888PressRelease) September 09, 2020 - Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Summer has officially begun in the UAE, which either means frequent trips to the beach or staying indoors to stay cool. Staying hydrated is important as well as practicing proper hygiene especially when out in public.

As an effort to raise awareness on UV safety, eye specialists at Quironsalud, an ophthalmological institute in Dubai share valuable tips to take care of the eyes especially this summer.

“It's essential for people to understand that our eyes are one of the most susceptible to UV damage. Prolonged exposure to UV rays has been associated with several eye problems such as macular degeneration and an increased risk of cataracts.”

Resident experts explain that wearing proper eye protection is important. Wide-brimmed hats are also advisable.

“When stepping outside, wear glasses that can block out glare and UV rays. For individuals who are wearing prescription glasses, photochromic lenses can also help. Wearing hats that can protect the eyes will also help in reducing UV exposure. As much as possible, avoid going out when the sun is at its highest and stay indoors as much as possible.”

Summers in the UAE can rise up to 42oC and drinking lots of water will help in keeping the eyes moisturized preventing dry eyes and irritation.

“Extended exposure to sunlight may cause dry eyes, so drinking lots of water can prevent that from happening. Eating foods that are good for our eyesight, is also important. Individuals who have specific eye problems should consult with their ophthalmologist to receive the right advice.”
