  • (1888PressRelease) June 05, 2012 - The World Stadium Congress 2012 - Hosted in Qatar was inaugurated this morning with leading industry delegations in attendance. Qatar Public Works Authority, Ashghal, Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee, Qatar Olympic Committee, ASPIRE Academy for Sporting Excellence and CH2m Hill were among the VIP attendees at the opening of the industry led summit, being held at the Sheraton Hotel Doha this morning.

    The Congress opened with more than 300 delegates attending. Youssef Al Horr, Chairman of the Gulf Authority for Research and Development (GORD) delivered the opening presentation on the first day of the World Stadium Congress. GORD has spearheaded the development of the QSAS Sport sustainability metric - the world's only - in order to ensure sustainable principles are adhered to in the development and construction of Qatar's world cup stadiums. Mr. Al Horr's presentation provided a timely insight into key sustainability objectives that are delivered by the metric in a bid to ensure a zero carbon world cup for the Gulf state. A.J Colletti, Senior Advisor for Building Affairs from Qatar Public Works Authority, Ashghal, complemented the keynote address in his presentation which followed, by focusing upon considering sustainability in the master-planning process.

    The 3-day congress features industry insight from sports federations, organizing committees, architects and designers from across the globe in a bid to provide a platform for stakeholders in the international stadium design and development industry to come together and share best practice strategies of overcoming key obstacles and challenges in delivering world class stadiums.

    Joining Qatari stakeholders in the stadium design and development industry are international organising committees and stadium developers in discussions including committees for future sporting tournaments such as Glasgow 2014, Sochi 2014, Organising Committee of the XXII Olympic Winter Games and XI Paralympic Winter Games and Russian Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities.
