  • Washington, DC-MD-VA-WV (1888PressRelease) September 25, 2012 - Last October, My Girlfriend's House, Inc. set a personal record by donating over 1,200 purses filled with health and beauty products to at-risk women and teenage girls across the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Initially aiming to collect 500 purses, the group managed to surpass the goal in just two weeks. This year, the organization is back with their 3rd annual Purse Strings for My Girlfriend's Purse Drive, but this time they are looking to fill 800 purses in just 30 days.

With the success of last year's drive, it only seems natural that expectations and pressure rise for this year's run. Veronica Eyenga, My Girlfriend's House Executive Director shrugs off the notion; "We knew we were in trouble last year when we broke the 600 mark," laughed Eyenga "Filling all of the purses with the personal care products was no easy task, but we were more than happy to do so. Now, with our new goal of 800 purses, it's really time for us to roll up our sleeves and get these women and teenage girls the everyday healthcare items they desperately need."

Donations are already off to a great start, according to the group, thanks to the success of last year's drive. Pledges and donations started pouring in weeks in advance from individuals and groups eager to support the Purse Strings Drive. My Girlfriend's House has also issued a friendly challenge to contributors: a single donation of 100 purses and 800 of any single required beauty or healthcare item.

"For us, it's not about 'winning' or obtaining accolades -- the Purse Strings Drive and My Girlfriend's House itself has always been about community," Eyenga noted. "These individuals are donating items out of the kindness of their hearts and a desire to further the goals of our organization: to help young women in need. This has been our group's focus, and will continue to be so in the future."

The Purse Strings for My Girlfriend's Purse Drive launches October 1st and continues throughout the month, ending just in time for their November purse stuffing party. The organization has established designated drop off locations for individuals interested in donating purses or products in Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Prince George's County, and Virginia.

The drive is just one service offered by My Girlfriend's House, which dedicates itself to improving the lives of at-risk teenage girls, so that they may reach greater success in school, the workplace, and beyond. The group primarily offers mentorship to those in need with the intent of fostering confidence, self-esteem, and a sense of community amongst their peers.
