  • (1888PressRelease) September 05, 2013 - Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt is a Grammy Award (1994) winning Hindustani classical music instrumentalist and plays the Mohan Veena. He has attracted international attention by his successful Indianization of the western Hawaiian guitar with his perfect assimilation of sitar, sarod & veena by giving it an evolutionary design and shape. A Padmashree awardee (2002), he is the foremost disciple of Pt. Ravi Shankar and is also one of the few Indians to have performed at the 'Crossroads Guitar Festival' organized by Eric Clapton.

He began by saying our music, language and culture are our identity and its up to the youth to take it forward and in an effort to relate to the young audience, before every piece that he played, Pt Vishwa Mohan Bhatt explained the relationship between a raaga and aalaap. In his words, a raag is a person and aalaap is its introduction.

Keeping in mind the age group of the audience, Pt Vishwa Mohan Bhatt introduced MICA to raags with more energy. His performance began with raag yaman - which is about spirituality and romanticism. The crowd was kept mesmerized all through the performance and a loud standing ovation followed.

Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt performed at MICA as a part of collaboration between Studio7 (the Music Committee at MICA) and SPICMACAY.

The concert marks the establishment of the 'MICA Heritage Club', which is a joint collaboration between MICA and SPICMACAY, initiated by Studio7, the Music committee at MICA. The Heritage club aims to have many such concerts, Lec-Dems (Lecture Demonstrations), screenings and talks organized in collaboration with SPICMACAY at the MICA campus.
