  • (1888PressRelease) December 15, 2012 - Austin, TX - Protect America, Inc., one of the nation's ten largest home security companies, has joined with Be the Match for a donor drive on December 13th, 2012.

Protect America will host representatives from Be the Match starting at 9 a.m. to help screen potential donors for their national bone marrow database. Created in 1986, the Be the Match Registry attempts to connect patients in need of bone marrow transplants with willing donors. Operated by the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), a Minnesota-based non-profit, the Be the Match Registry currently has a database of more than 9.5 million donors. Over its 25 year history, Be the match and NMDP have helped more than 50,000 patients around the world find donors.

"It is our honor and pleasure to help Be the Match and the NMDP in any way we can," said Protect America executive vice president Scott Fleming. "Many of our employees, through friends and family, have dealt with the ordeal of finding a marrow donor and know it's not easy. We want to support the efforts of Be the Match and I'll be the first one waiting to be screened."

The Be the Match screening process involves a quick and simple cheek swap that is analyzed for a potential match. If a preliminary match is found between a donor and patient, additional screenings are ordered. Patients in need of bone marrow transplants suffer from a wide range of diseases, such as lymphoma, aplastic anemia, and leukemia.

"This is a great opportunity to help a great cause," said Melissa Walker, a spokeswoman for Protect America. "Be the Match is worthwhile organization performing a vital public service. I hope our employees and the public comes out to support the NMDP and join the registry."

Be the Match will start screening potential donors at 9 a.m. at Protect America's offices, located at 3800 Quick Hill Road, Austin, Texas 78728 Bldg. 1-100. Visit www.marrow.org for more information about Be The Match or the National Marrow Donor Program.
