  • (1888PressRelease) August 28, 2013 - The workshop was led by Dr. Arvind Singhal, Samuel Shirley and Edna Holt Marston Professor and Director, Social Justice Initiative Department of Communication, University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).

Prof. Arvind Singhal's workshop explained with illustrations how both Positive Deviance and Liberating Structures represent 'disruptive' interventional innovations with a proven track record in tackling complex social, organizational and business, and individual-level behavioral challenges.

Prof. Singhal discussed concepts, case studies and application of the Positive Deviance approach. He explained with stories and examples how positive deviance has been employed in over 40 countries to address a wide variety of social and organizational purposes, including decreasing malnutrition and infant and maternal mortality in Vietnam, reducing school dropouts in Argentina and in the U.S.; and reducing hospital-acquired infections in the U.S. and Colombia.

He also discussed about the practice of Liberating Structures and how it dramatically boosts peoples' capacity to participate and collectively generate solutions that are empowering and sustainable. The practice of Liberating Structures has been used in business and corporate settings, in educational and healthcare institutions, and in civil society organizations.

The two-day workshop was attended by teams from NGOs, foundations, faculty and scholars including UNICEF, FWWB, Unnati, Viasmo Kids, Shaishav, India Sight Screeners' Foundation, Public Health Foundation of India, Amrita School of Communication, Indian Institute of Public Health, IRMA, PDPU and MICA.
