Principles for Responsible Investment Reporting Deadline: A Sprint to the Finish

Top Quote Time is running out for real asset investors & asset managers to answer Climate Change questions. End Quote
  • (1888PressRelease) March 29, 2021 - Toronto - There is just one month left for owners and investment managers who are Signatories to the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) to complete their annual report on their progress implementing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) programs. The challenge in the 2021 report is what IPE Magazine calls “tough new reporting measures” on potential impacts on investments from Climate Change.

In the face of this looming April 29th reporting deadline, R4 Advisors is inviting Signatories with real estate, infrastructure and agriculture/forestry investments to an April 8th webinar “Sprint to the Finish” that will provide a roadmap to success. This quick 30-minute session is about how to submit the Climate Change answers, worth 1300 points, on time while achieving the best possible score.

R4 Advisors, a collaboration between established real assets consulting firms Risk Nexus and RealAlts, works with clients to drive investment outperformance through the development of ESG strategies. A critical step in strategy development for real estate, infrastructure and agriculture investments is ESG reporting, particularly Climate Change reporting.

R4 helps Signatories to answer PRI questions by identifying the financial impact of opportunities and risks from Climate Change on their investment strategy. This differs from most ESG reporting on Climate Change which focuses on the carbon footprint – or the contribution to climate change – embedded in investments.

The PRI Climate Change questions are consistent with the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). PRI signatories must make disclosures covering two of the four elements of TCFD reporting: Governance and Strategy. For now, questions on Risk Management, and Metrics & Targets are voluntary.

“Substantial changes to the PRI report require investors to identify the opportunities and risks from Climate Change embedded in their portfolios, and to test the resilience of investment strategies through scenario analysis,” said R4 Managing Director Tania Caceres. “Last year, when Signatories were asked to report on Climate Change, but the results were not scored, only 26% of investment managers provided answers to scenario analysis questions. We are ready to help because in 2021 the Climate Change questions must be answered.”

“We have developed a strategy for success for real asset investors by using our knowledge of the commonalities of each asset class and capturing that in a technology-assisted process that helps to speed through the work,” Catherine Marshall, R4 Principal said. “For Signatories who don’t know how to get started, our PRI Sprint will make a challenging process relatively easy.”

“PRI is asking Signatories to adopt best practices in ESG reporting on Climate Change,” Ms. Marshall continued. “Soon TCFD-aligned reporting will be what every investor wants, and what regulators will mandate. We encourage PRI Signatories to get ahead of the curve by doing well on reporting Climate Change risks and opportunities this year.”

The webinar “SPRINT to the Finish - Principles for Responsible Investment Reporting 2021”will be held Thursday April 8th, 2021 at 11 am EDT.
