  • Atlanta, GA (1888PressRelease) October 31, 2023 - On Saturday, November 4, 2023 from 12p-4p at 2450 Cascade Rd SW Atlanta, GA 30311 Hillside International Truth Center in Honor of Dambala Hwedo will host the last installment of African American Women in the Yoruba Tradition of Egungun & Ancestral Agency Panel Event to explore the critical role held by African-American women in the Yoruba tradition of Egungun and to highlight the importance of ancestral agency. This special event is free and open to the public and is in direct partnership with the Office of HRG Olori Olamiji Pearse and Egbe Egungun Oyotunji USA. This panel event comes as the third of its kind with the first having been held July 24, 2023 in Chicago, IL at Africa International House and the second Labor Day weekend 2023 at the Egbe Egungun Retreat Penn Center, SC. This 3-part series has attracted scholars, practitioners, and community leaders, who have shared their insights and experiences on this significant topic.     The Iya Agan, Egbe Egungun Oyotunji, HE Sangoma Oludoye is slated to provide the history of Egungun Society Oyotunji and detail how the Egbe positioned itself to include the support of women.

    The Yoruba tradition of Egungun is intricately linked to ancestral veneration and agency, and African-American women have played a vital role in upholding and preserving this tradition. Through discussions and reflections on the experiences of African-American women in Egungun, the panel will shed light on how this tradition has impacted the community and enriched their lives. We will reference Dr. Bolaji Campbell’s work on the subject - as displayed in the text Fabric of Immortality: Ancestral Power, Performance, and Agency in Egungun Artistry as a reference for the dialogue. The intention of this panel is to facilitate a conversation and exchange experiences, insights and understanding on the Yoruba Tradition of ancestral veneration, power and legacy.
