  • Orange County, CA (1888PressRelease) June 28, 2013 - Based on the results of a study conducted with Western University of Health Sciences, PrescribeWellness today launched its pharmacy diabetes management program, PeakWellness.

"There are 25.8 million Americans with type 2 diabetes," said Terry Olson, Ph.D., vice president of behavioral solutions at PrescribeWellness. "Recent studies were showing mixed results regarding the impact of text and voice messages on self-management outcomes of chronic illness, which is why we decided to conduct an Automated Digital Intervention study on diabetes."

PrescribeWellness' study focused on patients currently seeking diabetes treatment at a local pharmacy in Southern California. One control group did not receive text or voice messages, while the group that did receive messages demonstrated a 30 percent increase on average in diabetes comprehension, diet, exercise and motivation that lead to more successful diabetes management outcomes.

The results found that psychological experiences, beliefs and other personal attributes affect how patients respond to their own treatment of diabetes. This data served as the foundation for the PeakWellness platform featuring:

    • Ease of patient enrollment - The technology allows for integration of necessary and pertinent health information reducing provider and patient time.
    • Voice of Authority as a trusted source - PeakWellness messages are delivered in the voice of the pharmacists increasing the likelihood of behavioral action taken by the message recipient.
    • Multi-channel communication - The technology allows for a patient-centered, decision-based approach to educational, motivational and behavioral messaging leading to a deeper level of patient understanding and engagement.
    • Reinforcement of medical needs and expected outcomes - The technology reinforces the medical needs of diabetic patients and their individualized goals based on their response and feedback.
    • Personalizing segmentation and use of analytics - Pharmacists have the ability to take any patient at any point of their disease state and place them on a customizable communication track.

"Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. and generates annual costs of $245 billion," said Olson. "PeakWellness can help to reduce this burden, position the pharmacist at the center of community healthcare prevention, and provide better outcomes for diabetic patients."
