  • Cleveland-Lorain-Elyria, OH (1888PressRelease) February 09, 2018 - Playwrights Local announces the 2018 Play Lab and Spring Workshops, the company’s third annual series of new plays and free classes. Featured are staged readings of works developed in the Play Lab incubator program, which teams playwrights, dramaturgs, and directors for months of in-depth script revision. Also offered are free playwriting workshops and post-show talkbacks. All events will be held on March 17-18 at Waterloo Arts in Cleveland and April 6 at None Too Fragile in Akron. All sessions are free and open to the public.

Most events in the 2018 Play Lab & Spring Workshops will be held on Saturday, March 17 and Sunday, March 18 at the Creative Space at Waterloo Arts (397 E. 156th Street, Cleveland, Ohio 44110). The series will conclude with a staged reading on Friday, April 6 at the home of project partner None Too Fragile Theatre (1835 Merriman Road, Akron, Ohio 44313). A schedule is available on Playwrights Local’s website at http://playwrightslocal.org/.

Tickets or reservations for the 2018 Play Lab & Spring Workshops are not required. Programs are intended for adults and teens. Additional information including directions and parking is available at http://playwrightslocal.org/.

Featured staged readings in the 2018 Play Lab include THE INTELLIGENCE MAN by Eileen O’Leary (directed by Erik Andrews with dramaturgy by Lenora Inez Brown); IN APPALACHIA, APERTURES by Brandon North (directed by Robert Lucchesi with dramaturgy by Les Hunter); and CONCUSSIVE BLAST by Tom Hayes (directed by Sean Derry with dramaturgy by David Todd). Each presentation will be followed by an audience talkback. Dates and times are available at http://playwrightslocal.org/.

Classes in this year’s Spring Workshops include THE SMALLEST STAGE: WRITING THE TABLETOP PLAY with Mike Geither and Amy Schwabauer and THE CHARACTER’S THE THING with Mary E. Weems, Ph.D. Sessions will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 17, and will be free and open to the public, with no reservations required.

“The Play Lab provides playwrights with an important type of support,” says David Todd, Artistic Director of Playwrights Local. “There’s great value in having extended time with a dramaturg, director, and cast over the course of reworking a new play. At the same time, our Spring Workshops provide classes on playwriting fundamentals and special topics for anyone who’s interested. We’re excited to present these programs for the third straight year, and also to partner with Akron’s None Too Fragile for the first time.”
