  • Chicago, IL (1888PressRelease) January 16, 2013 - Recently, Ronald F. Wittmeyer received the Excellence in Public Service Award for his leadership in the development of the Legal Self Help Center at the Rolling Meadows Courthouse from the Northwest Suburban Bar Association (NWSBA). The center, which opened up this past summer, does not give legal advice nor represent people in court, but does provide legal information and offers help in completing legal forms to assist pro se litigants in representing themselves. "In addition to benefiting those individuals who visit the center, we hope the legal self-help center will in some small way contribute to the efficient administration of justice at the Rolling Meadows courthouse," Des Plaines vehicle accident attorney Ronald Wittmeyer said.

The Legal Self Help Center is located in Room 036 of the Third Municipal District courthouse, and is open from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Navigators provide assistance by accessing a comprehensive legal self-help website developed by Illinois Legal Aid Online (ILAO). A person might need help with such matters as filing a small claims case, getting help with a foreclosure case, aid with landlord-tenant problems or divorce and child support cases. If the Center cannot help an individual, the Center helps refer the individuals to agencies and legal clinics.

Mr. Wittmeyer of the Law Offices of R.F. Wittmeyer, a Mt. Prospect personal injury attorneys firm, is the second vice-president of the NWSBA and spearheaded this project for the bar association. "From the beginning, we saw this as an opportunity to use the Association's resources to provide a much-needed public service," Wittmeyer said. "The Center provides another way for us to give back to the citizens of the communities in which our members live and work." With its success, Wittmeyer hopes that the hours will soon expand and the center will be able to help more visitors to the courthouse navigate the Cook County judicial system.
