  • Philadelphia, PA-NJ (1888PressRelease) October 06, 2013 - The month of October marks National Disability Employment Awareness Month - a celebration of America's disabled workers and their contributions across a variety of industries. In an effort to shine a light on disability employment issues while simultaneously honoring those who work through their disability, allRisk - a New Jersey-based disaster recovery contractor - will be participating in the national campaign.

This annual month of recognition is led by the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy, but has expanded across the country to inspire some of its strongest involvement at the local and community level.

Dean Ragone, Co-founder of allRisk (www.TeamAllRisk.com), has been a quadriplegic for nearly 40 years, having broken his neck in a swimming pool accident as a teenager. After undergoing months of surgery and rehabilitation, Ragone found himself "mobilizing" by a wheelchair and suffering painful muscle spasms. Despite his physical disability, Ragone has worked hand in hand with his business partner, Frank Messina, to build the now-19-year-old, 24/7 emergency response contracting business that specializes in helping companies respond to property-related disasters.

"It's easy to hear the word disabled and think of all the things you're unable to do," says Ragone. "But with me, I've always been one to focus on the opposite -what am I able to do? When you're dealing with devastating property damage, you're dealing with people who feel like they've lost everything. A key part of what we do at allRisk is helping rebuild that loss. Having lost some things of my own, I have a personal attachment to that mission."

In addition to his work with allRisk, Ragone has embodied the spirit of National Disability Employment Awareness Month in his philanthropic efforts. "I'm trying to help break the assumption that people with disabilities are any less qualified than someone else for a profession," he insists. "This country has come a long way in accepting and understanding that truth, and the month of October is just another way to drive home that point."

Businesses of all sizes across every industry are encouraged to participate in National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Whether it is something as simple as putting up a poster or something as in-depth as developing an extensive program, all efforts are meant to encourage a more inclusive American workforce.
