  • (1888PressRelease) February 02, 2012 - Many of London's top retailers enjoyed a strong Christmas trading period, despite early predictions to the contrary. For some, the record £2 billion spent in the UK on Boxing Day meant their own sales records were broken within hours of opening their doors. Some shops reported purchases within 2 minutes of their doors opening during the sales. The pub and bar trade have also declared healthy sales by the end of this year's season.

Against a background of national austerity measures, retail predictions in the London media were somewhat gloomy during the early days of December. Yet within the first ten days reports were already emerging of more typically buoyant sales. Another ten days later and all predictions were turned on their head in the face of many positive sales reports. The Confederation of British Industry has now released nation-wide figures showing reported sales volumes jumped up by 9% in December. Many leading retailers were reporting higher figures, some with record breaking sales on the traditional start of the sales on Dec 26th. The figures for many in London will also be higher, with the media reporting shoppers queuing outside major stores long before doors opened. Dec 27th was another key trading day, with customers rushing to take advantage of both the sales and the bank holiday. Retail analysts highlight the draw of the post-Christmas sales for international shoppers, who arrive in the capital specifically to shop. Airlines, hotels and travel companies promote London shopping trips all year round, coping with extra demand during the peak shopping seasons.

"London has some distinct, unique advantages. Seasonal sales peaks are always boosted by the extra visitors as well as 'local shoppers'. For decades, London shopping has been a regular, important ritual for customers from both outside the capital and the UK. Smaller stores can really benefit from this, with a steady flow of millions of new visitors arriving every day during the high seasons. Location is very important.

One of the problems we know retailers face is sourcing suitable London retail commercial property. We have a range of properties available in some great locations such as Essex Road in Angel, Cheshire Street in Shoreditc, Clapham Road in Stockwell and other such areas. We make the process as streamlined as possible, listening to their needs and actively matching them only to suitable premises," said a spokesperson from London commercial property lettings specialist Pearl and Coutts.
