Pan American Metals of Miami says Gold Could still Reach $2000 in 2012

Top Quote Gold has a good chance of clearing the psychological barrier of $2000 an ounce during 2012, according to many market analysts. End Quote
  • (1888PressRelease) December 26, 2011 - MIAMI, FL - Gold lost out this year to the attraction of cash, particularly during the latter part of the year. There was a rush to sell investments that had performed well, like gold, in return for the dollar, which was perceived to offer a safe haven. Just how safe the dollar may turn out to be remains to be seen but it is pretty definite that the dollar will not give a 14% return on investment over the next year as gold has done this year.

Gold is still supported by strong fundamentals: physical demand, central bank buying and the debt crises in Europe and the US. On the downside, following gold's meteoric rise in the first half of the year, it has been oversold; profit taking and end-of-year book squaring have also dealt a hit to the yellow metal. Gold reached $1900 this year but fell short of making it to $2000. For the metal to make $2000 from its current position would require a gain over the year of close to $400, which would eclipse gains in any one previous year. Market experts do not, however, consider this impossible, especially if there is any kind of cataclysmic event in the euro zone, or elsewhere.

"The positive factors supporting gold still outweigh the negative factors," says Bill Hionas of Pan American Metals of Miami. "The 'cash is king' philosophy will soon change."

2011 has been a tumultuous year for precious metals with gold being exceptionally volatile; many experts are of the opinion that that volatility will persist during 2012, at least for a while. After that, gold could see a strong rebound.
