  • (1888PressRelease) April 26, 2011 - Nearly two years ago, San Francisco jazz and blues vocalist Pamela Rose launched a musical love affair with the undersung women songwriters who helped created the American Songbook. It started with her latest CD Wild Women of Song: Great Gal Composers of the Jazz Era, then turned into the ever-evolving multimedia show that has thrilled audiences in California, New York, and London.

Rose and "Wild Women of Song," which most recently appeared at Yoshi's San Francisco in March, will make their Monterey Jazz Festival debut on Saturday, September 17 at 7:00 pm. The singer will also bring the show to Dinkelspiel Auditorium on Wednesday, July 20 as part of the Stanford Jazz Workshop.

"This has been such an extraordinary time," says Rose. "I set out to do a little research into the lives and times of some of the women songwriters featured on the CD. Instead, I've found myself in one of those rare situations an artist dreams of: where the material seems to propel you, and you are a willing hostage on an unexpected journey."

The joyous, female-centric perspective of jazz history that's put forth in Rose's "Wild Women" concerts highlights the accomplishments of composers such as Kay Swift, Bernice Petkere, Doris Fisher, Peggy Lee, and Dorothy Fields. "I love celebrating these women and restoring them to our cultural memory," says Rose. "Their life stories are not only individually fascinating, they seem to be grabbing audiences of all ages and reminding them of the very vibrant and earthy nature of the early days of jazz, blues, and American music itself."

Rose's research, which is compiled in the web site www.wildwomenofsong.com, documents the expansion of the show itself. "Each time I add a writer, I gather much more information than I ever present on stage," says Rose. "I find that each writer has her own voice and personality, and I want the audience to experience these mini life stories as a theatrical, almost spoken-word experience that flows like music."

Rose has heard from people all over the world asking for more info about these composers as well as offering photos, sheet music, and-in at least one instance-details about an alleged long-standing affair with one of the women. She's also received invitations from museums, universities, and jazz festivals, which in some cases will necessitate presenting the show in subtitles.

As a result of her research, Rose has amassed plenty of material for another album and is seriously pondering a show entirely devoted to the great blues songwomen. Ida Cox and Alberta Hunter are already part of the "Wild Women" roster, but there's also "Memphis Minnie, Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey-lots of pretty deep writing and amazing stories, especially pertaining to the Delta blues."

Rose's recent New York debut at Feinstein's prompted Broadway After Dark's reviewer, Ward Morehouse III, to rave: "I have never seen a better tribute to the legendary women songwriters of the American songbook than Pamela Rose's recent show at Feinstein's. Using period slides and her own electrifying voice and stage magnetism, Pamela Rose brings the house down time and time again. Bring Pamela Rose back to Feinstein's and, I hope, even to Broadway in the brilliant Wild Women of Song!"

Pamela Rose will be performing at Stanford with Tammy Lynne Hall, pianist and musical director; saxophonist Kristen Strom; bassist Ruth Davies; and drummer Kent Bryson. The same musicians, plus guitarist Jeff Massanari, will be with her at Monterey.
