  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) May 20, 2016 - Pamela Asai's mesmerizing abstracts invite the viewer to experience the rush of making a mark. Asai's work, though done in oil paint, recalls the hand-drawn scribbles of Cy Twombly, who Asai counts among her influences, alongside Frank Auerbach and Jackson Pollock. Veering on her own path from these influences, Asai's work is noticeably more polished and graphically focused.

Asai builds large, forceful shapes out of energetic brushstrokes and trims her palette down to a few complimentary colors. Directions and currents of movement emerge from her lines as the composition progresses. Patterns are revealed and even become the focal point of some works. Asai explores the minimalist ideas of repetition and creation of texture through pattern, but she often lets her probing take her into a space of three-dimensionality. Not only do her pieces often end up establishing real textures, but they speak to the action of painting itself.

Asai was born in Brisbane, Australia, where she lives still today. She has participated in both group and solo shows and is also an EFL teacher at the University of Queensland.

    About the Exhibition
    G'day For Art in NYC
The rich contemporary art scene of Australia and New Zealand gets its due in Agora Gallery's spring show Out From Down Under & Beyond: Fine Art from Australia & New Zealand. Featuring six extraordinary artists of all ages and disciplines, this exhibition offers a survey on what cutting edge work looks like on the other side of the world.

Photographers explore the unique land - and just as importantly, water - that surrounds them, obscuring and revealing different layers in turn. Surrealist painters bring out the brightest and most hallucinatory of colors in the atmosphere, and render everyday scenes beautiful in their graphic simplicity. Pure abstraction is also represented in painting, with spirited textures and haunting shadows combining in unfamiliar ways. The styles showcased flow from lush to spare; like the region it represents, the work is extraordinarily varied and always exciting. When what one group considers exotic is what another considers to be everyday, a new kind of visual language is born. Bringing these different perspectives to light and starting a dialogue with viewers is something the art world does singularly well.
