  • Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL (1888PressRelease) April 26, 2018 - On Thursday April 19th, the Church of Scientology hosted Savoy South Dance Hall for their final Swing Dance for Charity of the 2018 season. Sixty-one dancers of all skill levels converged on the oval dance floor of the Fort Harrison’s Crystal Ballroom for an evening of live entertainment, food and dance.

Though a good time was had by all the real winners of the evening were the children served by that evening’s benefitting charity – the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Police Athletic League. Founded in 2001, this PAL provides tutoring, mentoring and athletic activities to the youth of Lealman, an unincorporated city right next to St. Petersburg.

These seasonal swing dances benefiting non-profits such as PAL were the creation of career dancer Arleene Bowles, who wanted to use her skills to contribute back to the community. Past charities assisted include Toys for Tots, Bay Pines VA (Fisher House), the Pinellas County Foster and Adoptive Parents Association. All donations from the entrance fee along with the “Cake Walk” style raffle were donated to PAL.

“The Founder of Scientology, Mr. L. Ron Hubbard said: ‘A being is only as valuable as he can serve others’ and it is wonderful to see the community come out for events like this to support one of this area’s non-profits,” said Lisa Mansell, the Public Affairs Director for the Church of Scientology.

Swing Dancing has maintained a devoted following since the 1920’s, and saw a revival in the 90’s thanks to the popularization of swing music in films such as “Swingers” and “The Mask”.
