Over 1,000 Youth From Across Southern California and Nevada Gather to Promote Non-Violence

  • Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) March 06, 2015 - Youthful members of the Soka Gakkai International-USA Buddhist Association (SGI-USA) are conducting a peace exposition to promote international peace and security, the abolition of nuclear weapons, nonviolence, and discuss other pressing issues affecting global society. The event, called #SOCALPEACEEXPO, is being held at the Cal Poly Pomona (California State Polytechnic University, Pomona) Kellogg Gym on Sunday March 8, 2015 from1:00pm to 3:30pm. The event is free and open to the public.

    The Peace Expo event will feature musical performances by the SGI-USA brass band/fife and drum corps, hip-hop dance crew, taiko drummers and chorus. There will also be a number of exhibitions on display including "Victory Over Violence", "Gandhi, King and Ikeda: Legacy of Building Peace," "Transforming the Human Spirit" (English and Spanish), and "Children are the Future." There will also be a "Buddhism 101" booth for anyone interested in learning more about the philosophy of Buddhism. Pre-school-, elementary school- and junior high school-aged children are also scheduled to sing a medley of songs for a more peaceful world.

    SGI-USA is the American affiliate of the Soka Gakkai International ("Society for the Creation of Value"). SGI-USA is the most diverse Buddhist community in the United States with more than 500 chapters and some 100 centers throughout the country. Based on core Buddhist principles such as respecting the dignity of human life and the interconnectedness of self and the environment, SGI-USA engages in various peace activities, including human rights education, the movement to abolish nuclear weapons and efforts to promote sustainable development.
