The Spelling Bee, a signature fundraiser of the nonprofit Schoolhouse Supplies, will raise funds to support the Free Store for Teachers-which has provided $13.4 million worth of free school supplies to local classrooms in need.

The Spelling Bee will take place on Friday, January 28, 2011 at the Portland Art Museum (1219 SW Park Avenue) and will bring together past winners, along with new challengers-all vying for the title of Portland's spelling champion. Confirmed celebrity spellers include Dave Dahl of Dave's Killer Bread, Portland Trail Blazer Patty Mills, KGW morning Meteorologist Nick Allard and Tandy Wolf, OnPoint Community Credit Union's 2010 Educator of the Year.

In addition to the Spelling Bee and silent auction, OnPoint Community Credit Union's President and CEO Rob Stuart will present details of the 2011 OnPoint Prize for Excellence in Education award. The award will give approximately $45,000 to local teachers and their schools, with one local teacher being named Educator of the Year and receiving their mortgage paid for one year.

"As a credit union that was formed by teachers over 78 years ago, we are proud to present the OnPoint Community Credit Union Celebrity Spelling Bee-an event that supports classrooms here in our community," said Stuart. "This Spelling Bee has become one of Portland's most unique events and is an ideal way to celebrate the work that our teachers do every day."

"We're thrilled that OnPoint Community Credit Union has made such a significant commitment to be this year's title sponsor of our annual fundraising event," said Gayle Kellman, executive director of Schoolhouse Supplies. "We welcome OnPoint, who has been a great partner to Schoolhouse Supplies and local public education, and we look forward to working together to ensure that all students and teachers have the tools needed to succeed in the classroom."
