It was his grandfather, Captain Barrel Head House, who built one of the first commercial airboats in 1942, out of three sheets of plywood and a few 2x4's, powered simply by a slant six-tank motor and a sawed off propeller-jet without a cage. The airboats themselves have come a long way since 1942, but the Houses' passion for the land and water remains the same.

Captain Barrel Head began his airboat career as a fishing guide, taking tourists charter fishing for snook, tarpon, and redfish, among other native species. The speed and agility with which these airboats could move made them excellent for travel, and with a backdrop like the Florida Everglades, the entertainment and education value was obvious. After Mitch's father, Captain Doug House, continued the tradition set by his own father, it was only natural for Mitch to follow in their footsteps.
