  • Boston, MA-NH (1888PressRelease) August 21, 2010 - Oak Point Associates, an architecture and engineering firm based in Biddeford, Maine, was recently presented a Citation Award by the AIA Committee on Architecture for Education. Officially announced on August 13, the award tops off a long list of honors the firm has received for the design of the Foster Center for Student Innovation at the University of Maine's Orono campus. The Committee recognized eight educational and cultural facilities built in the United States and one in China. The purpose of the design awards program is to "identify trends and emerging ideas, honor excellence in planning and design, and disseminate knowledge about best practices in educational and community facilities." The project was presented alongside other winners during this year's National AIA Convention held in Miami, Florida.

The Foster Center for Student Innovation was designed to house the University of Maine's "Innovation Engineering" program. The design and construction of the building was accomplished through close collaboration with the University. The facility acted as a learning lab for students, and provided a real world testing ground for the wood composites laboratory's experimental roof panels. The facility achieved LEED Silver from the U.S. Green Building Council as a building that incorporates numerous sustainable design strategies, and has received numerous design awards since its completion.

Oak Point's president and project architect, Robert Tillotson, said of the award: "We are once again honored to receive recognition for the Foster Center for Student Innovation. We are particularly pleased to see our work as a local Maine firm presented alongside the projects of some of the country's leading educational facility architects. We strive to realize the progressive vision of our clients and are excited when acknowledgment is given to the development happening in this state."

The Foster Student Innovation Center has also received the following awards - AIA Maine Design Awards: Merit Award; AIA New Hampshire IDID 2008 Excellence in Sustainable Design and Development Awards: Merit Award; 2008 Education Design Showcase: Grand Prize Winner/College and University; 2008 Learning By Design Citation of Excellence Award: College/University "Green" School Building.
