Notion Press is elated to bring you a book that traces back the history and evolution of one of the revolutionary inventions by mankind - the gun powder. Regarded as a crucial invention after fire and the wheel, gunpowder indeed is the foundation for all the ultra-modern weapons we use today. The book The History and Chronology of Gunpowder and Gunpowder Weapons (c.1000 to 1850), written by Henry Pratap Phillips, presents before us a timeline of gunpowder and gunpowder weapons. The book is now available to readers all over the world.

The origin and roots of gunpowder is still considered to be a mystery. It is generally believed that gunpowder was invented in China and spread to the rest of the world, and India via the silk routes. But the author, Henry Pratap Phillips, had a different say. Based on the research done by the author, he realised that gunpowder was actually invented in India and went to China via trade routes, from where it got its recognition in the world. The book is an interesting read on the invention's origin and deals with the development and evolution of weaponry that changed the way wars were fought.

The author selected the timeframe from 1000AD to 1850AD to systematically sequence and discusses the weapons used. He also believed that this book will also act as a platform for future researchers, arms historians, and weapon experts to conduct various researches.

In between his Engineering course, he served for a short stint in the Merchant Navy and also the Indian Navy (During World War II as an Electrical Artificer) when his ship was torpedoed by the enemy and he swam in shark infested waters and escaped alive. He rejoined his studies and completed his course at Guindy College and joined the State services as an Electrical Engineer (Power distribution). During this period, he was selected and joined the Indian Army in its Technical Wing in the corps of EME. He retired in September 1972 and thereafter took up his scholarly pursuit.

This book is a result of those days of research in the field of Gunpowder and Gunpowder Weapons. Although he had completed his manuscript he was unfortunate not to see the same published and passed away on 30th August 1982. As his only son, PK Phillips took it upon himself to ensure that the manuscript was put in a printable format and bring his hard work to its logical conclusion.
