  • (1888PressRelease) October 15, 2019 - Los Angeles, CA - Familia Unida is hosting the Familia Unida 16th Annual Wheelchair Wash & Wellness Fiesta Co-Chaired with Supervisor Hilda L. Solis this Sunday October 13th from 11:00 am - 6pm at the ELA CIVIC CENTER. We are pleased to showcase the first “Abilities in Action Advocate” Honoree Ms. Norma Villar (AAA - Recognition). Ms. Norma Villar was raised in East Los Angeles and an active advocate residing in Pasadena. Norma became paralyzed in 2014 due to a congenital birth defect - named thoracic spine herniation that surfaced later in life. Her initial shock of being confined to a wheelchair, living with pain and enduring seven (7) corrective surgeries to her spine that got worse instead of better became scary when the complications from each surgery began to cause more pain, weakness to her hand, affecting her brain, motor and sensory skills lead to feelings of wanting to end her life and question her spirituality and purpose. During this time of despair and depression was also the same time that something inside her clicked when she regained her faith and confidence leading to healing and less pain.

Ms. Norma Villar created “Tiger Boxing” a program for persons living with various disabilities whereby putting on boxing gloves to increase stamina, push out frustrations and pull out that special something inside of you that needs to be released so that you can showcase your inner fire that needs to be released so that you can be at your very best. A concept that came from her passion of boxing that she used to do years before becoming confined to a wheelchair. Through her passion of wanting to feel healthier, increase her physical strength, promote safety and increase socialization, Norma brings awareness to her message that inspires people to be courageous, conquer fear, lose weight too!

“Family Unida is a pillar of support and community for individuals and families living with MS and disabilities in the Greater Los Angeles Area. As the first MS organization in the entire United States to specifically outreach to the Spanish-speaking community, I am thrilled to congratulate Familia Unida for the 16th Annual Wheelchair Wash and Wellness Festival. It is my pleasure to recognize Ms. Norma Villar for her outstanding program, “Fire Boxing,” which creates a fun and fulfilling atmosphere for people of all ability and mobility levels to shine.” said Congresswoman Judy Chu.

“Norma, exemplifies the meaning of letting go of fear and pushing forward to be your best for yourself while also inspiring others to do the same. For this reason she will be recognized as the first Familia Unida Abilities in Action Advocate. Thank you for igniting the fire in us that promotes feeling and looking more fabulous, said Irma Resendez” Founder of Familia Unida.
