The highlight of the evening was the performance by Damkören SALT, a professional female choir from Sweden. The guests were treated to freshly baked lussebullar (saffron buns) and pepparkakor (gingerbread cookies) along with tea and coffee. The magical evening conjured images of a typical Scandinavian winter celebration, in Dubai.

The women's choir, SALT began in a basement in 2003. The choir's conductor, who was directing the student choir Friedman's Apostles, decided to start this choir and the first seven members were recruited from Friedman's Apostles. The SALT currently comprises around 30 women between the ages of 21 and 42 who meet every week to sing and socialise.

The choir has performed at a variety of concert projects with varying content. Everything from the 30s and 40s, jazz, gospel and popular music of Swedish and Nordic origin and classical choral music is included in its repertoire. The choir has also recorded two Christmas albums, the latest in autumn 2011. Six tours have so far been held with visits to the United States, China and Finland, as well as to the Swedish west coast and Dalarna.

Saint Lucy's Day falls on December 13, in Advent, once coinciding with the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year before calendar reforms. It's considered as a festival of light, especially in Scandinavia, which has periods of long dark winters.

In Norway and Sweden, where Lucy is called Lucia, girls dressed as Lucy walk in procession, carrying rolls and cookies, as songs are sung. The celebrations are believed to help one live the long winter days with enough light.

Saint Lucy is celebrated by the Nordic people - Danes, Swedes, Finns and Norwegians - as well as by Americans, Italians and Canadians. Alongside Midsummer, the St. Lucia celebrations represent one of the foremost cultural traditions in Sweden, with its clear reference to life in the ancient peasant communities: darkness and light, cold and warmth. Lucia (Lucy) is an ancient mythical figure who is considered as a bearer of light in the dark Swedish winters.
