  • (1888PressRelease) April 03, 2011 - In the wake of the recent news about a WWASP program (Teen Mentor Academy) being closed by child welfare (PANI) authorities in Costa Rica, New Summit Academy Costa Rica wanted to confirm a few key pieces of information about our relationship with PANI Costa Rica:

    • New Summit Academy has been licensed by PANI since 2006.

    • PANI and the US Embassy make regular visits to campus to ensure compliance with their ethical standards of housing, supervision, nutrition, access to uncensored communication with parents, etc.

    • All students are registered with the US Embassy upon enrollment at NSA.

    • NSA is up to date with all government requirements for immigration (legal power of attorneys for representation of minors while they are overseas)

    • NSA is accredited academically by SACS / AdvancEd in the USA as a special purpose school

    • NSA's Personal Growth Director, Mario Duran, has been working with PANI for years in the development of their policies, protocols, and high standards for ethical treatment and care of minors in therapeutic boarding programs.

    • PANI has offered to answer any inquiries about NSA to ensure that our reputation is not damaged by these unfortunate events.

We feel proud, as do our current and alumni families, to be able to set the standard for a nurturing, ethical, and empowering milieu for our students. It is unfortunate that these situations occur, but we can also be thankful that Costa Rican therapists have been educated to report questionable situations to PANI and that PANI can take action to ensure student safety. This says quite a bit about the ethical standards of psychologists in Costa Rica.
