New Mandatory China Standard for Sunglasses and Sun Glare Filters

A look at China’s new mandatory standard for sunglasses and sun glare filter products – GB 39552.1-2020. End Quote

(1888PressRelease) February 19, 2022 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, is reminding stakeholders that China’s new mandatory standard for sunglasses and sun glare filters came into effect on December 1, 2021.

GB 39552.1-2020, and its testing method, GB/T 39552.2-2020, covers:
• Sunglasses
• Sun glare filters
• Clip-on sunglasses
• Replacement filters that are nominally afocal (plano power)

These products are for general use (e.g. driving) and provide protection against solar radiation. The standard is not applicable to eyewear for protection against artificial light radiation (e.g. solaria), occupational use or direct observation of the sun.

GB 39552.1-2020 is closely aligned to ISO 12312-1: 2013. To see a brief comparison between these standards, view SGS’s original SafeGuard 014/22.

The standard and its test method were originally published in November and December 2020 (respectively). Now in force, the standard supersedes the cancelled standard QB 2457-1999.
