  • (1888PressRelease) January 19, 2022 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification provider, is reminding bedding manufacturers that China has released a new national product standard – GB/T 22796-2021 – which comes into effect on February 1, 2022.

The updated standard was issued by the Standardization Administration of China and included in No. 12 announcement of approved national standards in 2021. It is applicable to bedding made of a textile shell and lining, with or without wadding fillings. Manufacturers of similar products can refer to the standard but should be aware it is not applicable to bedding filled with down and/or feathers, silk fillings, or bedding for infants aged 36 months or less.

The standard contains multiple provisions, including those relating to product quality, internal quality, appearance and process quality. Basic requirements for bedding include the provision that products must conform to GB 18401. In addition, bedding for children aged 3 to 14 years must also comply with GB 31701 and wadding fibers for filling must comply with GB 18383. There are also different quality requirements for different types of bedding product, which can be found in Table 1 of GB/T 22796-2021.

    GB/T 22796-2021 replaces five standards:

    • GB/T 22796-2009 - quilts, quilt cover
    • GB/T 22797-2009 - sheets
    • GB/T 22843-2009 - cushion and pillow
    • GB/T 22844-2009 - matched bedding
    • GB/T 22855-2009 - raschel bedding

It makes several revisions, additions and deletions to the technical provision, in comparison to previous standards. SGS has published an overview of these changes to help businesses understand them better.
