  • (1888PressRelease) April 19, 2013 - It's been over three years since a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the island nation of Haiti, forever altering the lives of millions of Haitians. Countless charities have offered a helping hand to the people of Haiti, including Nehemiah Vision Ministries, an international organization focused on transforming the lives of all people through education, social assistance, health and spiritual development.

Native Haitian, Espérandieu L. Pierre, started the ministry back in 1995, when he and his wife joined Campus Crusade for Christ as national representatives for Haiti. The Pierres created NVM as the social vision to complement the spiritual vision of Campus Crusade. Since its inception, NVM has worked to fulfill its mission of equipping young Haitians to take part in the rebuilding of Haiti. NVM's vision comes from Nehemiah 2:17-18, where Nehemiah rebuilds Jerusalem and removes the reproach over the city in biblical times.

NVM helps children, families and their communities meet the basic needs of life through its Christian academy, children's home and child sponsorship program. "NVM believes in providing people an opportunity to live in an environment where they can be trained and equipped to contribute to their own personal development and eventually to the rebuilding of Haiti," said Pastor Pierre.

For the past ten years, a volunteer board of directors has guided NVM's mission. While the organization has seen phenomenal growth in infrastructure, staff, mission reach and budget in the last ten years, the ministry hopes to continue that growth by hiring an executive director.

"The exponential growth that has taken place within NVM has urged the leadership to rethink the support system for the growth of the organization," said Pastor Pierre. As an extension of that growth, NVM recently named Mark Thompson as its full-time U.S.-based executive director. Prior to joining NVM, Thompson served as Vice President of International Programs and Disaster Response Team Leader at Mercy Ships.

"It's a privilege to be working with a great team at Nehemiah Vision Ministries and I look forward to serving the organization in its mission to the good people of Haiti," said Thompson. "The country has suffered much through recent disasters, but God has a plan for Haiti and it's exciting to see the role that NVM is having in the recovery and long-term development of the nation."

Thompson also has fifteen years' experience in environmental project and crisis management involving a variety of environmental and waste sites and seven years' experience in business ownership. Mark and his wife Lori, who works as the Accounts Payable Specialist for Mercy Ships, currently reside in East Texas and have four grown children.
