NC businesswoman copes with poor economy, launches national humor blog for the unemployed

  • Wilmington, NC (1888PressRelease) December 03, 2010 - Kathy Stream took a slightly different approach to news of her layoff: She started an online blog to tell the world. Enter MammaNeedsDough.com. Not surprisingly, she's attracted quite a few folks who can relate.

Stream has been looking for a job since she was laid off last May from her position as a communications director for a national association. She, like many people in the labor force, found herself on the bad end of a 9.6 percent national unemployment rate.

"After a couple of months of hard-core job searching, your brain starts to turn to goo," Stream said. "I just needed to write and be creative because that's what I do. And, if I can make a few people laugh who are going through a difficult time, that's even better."

Stream has a B.A. in journalism from the University of Maryland and has been writing professionally since 1994. Having worked through economic ups and downs, she said one motivator always remained consistent.

"I'd like it to be something nice and altruistic, but really, I was just hoping to make some dough," she joked.

After her latest bout with a turbulent economy, Stream decided to start her own venture: hence MammaNeedsDough.com.

The site (www.mammaneedsdough.com) follows the daily grind of an out-of-work communications professional and mother. Stream muses about living life on the other side of the desk and viewing the world through the eyes of the unemployed - all from a satirical standpoint.

In one post, entitled It Was the Worst of Times, It Was the Worst of Times:
Or, even Charles Dickens would think this sucks, Stream writes:

"The day the big cheese pulled me aside and said to me 'We're going to have to let you go,' I should have made a b-line for my paper clip collection."

Instead, I replied, 'You know, Katie, this travel schedule is getting a little demanding. Where to now? Vegas again?'

Actually, what really happened was: Katie and I cried, hugged each other and ate chocolate. I'm not joking…"
