  • Wilmington, NC (1888PressRelease) May 09, 2012 - Darrell Warren Rackley, a local actor and disabled Veteran turned new author publishes his debut children's book, "The Rack Pack: Darrell's Adventure" (New Hanover Printing & Publishing, 2012).

The book "The Rack Pack: Darrell's Adventure" was inspired by Darrell Rackley's own childhood memories "playing Army," as he calls it, with his brothers and neighborhood friends. Rackley reminisces, "We would wear our Dad's old baggy Army clothes and helmets two sizes too big. We played hard, had fun and went home tired." After a couple weeks of drafting the story and getting it illustrated, "the Rack Pack" came to life. The book "The Rack Pack: Darrell's Adventure" hit the shelves early April and is now available for purchase through New Hanover Printing & Publishing's online bookstore at www.newhanoverprinting.com (ISBN:978-0-9830616-7-0; 11"x 8.5" landscape; saddle-stitched paperback; 26 pages; $15.00).

"The Rack Pack: Darrell's Adventure" is a fun and adventurous children's book about neighborhood kids "playing Army." The kids dress up in their father's oversized fatigues and protect their fort at the playground in a dirt clod war. "A dirt clod war," Rackley says, "is just like a snowball fight, only with big clumps of dirt." The battle really comes to life on the page through the original digitally-drawn cartoons of NC illustrator Aaron Johnson. With Johnson's vibrant illustrations and Rackley's entertaining narrative, "The Rack Pack" takes playing Army to a whole new level. While the book is action-packed, carefree and spirited, it is more than just a story about young boys playing in the dirt. "It's about making friends, working together and accomplishing a goal," says Rackley. The book carries a meaningful message for young readers (ages 6-12) and touches on themes of camaraderie, bravery, and even combating bullies.
